Does my product need BIS certification?

Enter your product or HS code. We'll show you whether a BIS Quality Control Order applies, which scheme you need, what BIS charges and how long it usually takes. Free, no login.

How it works: type a product (for example "toys" or "LED lamp") or an HS code below. Each result shows the Quality Control Order, the BIS scheme, the official BIS fees and the typical time, with a link to the official source. Not in our list? That does not mean BIS is not needed: send it to us and we'll check it free.

How BIS certification works for importers

A product needs BIS certification only when a government Quality Control Order (QCO) makes it compulsory. Customs will not clear covered goods without the BIS mark or registration. Which certificate you need depends on the product and where it is made:

  • CRS registration for listed electronics and IT products. You test at a BIS-recognised lab; there is no factory visit.
  • ISI mark for products like toys and footwear. BIS tests samples and inspects the factory.
  • FMCS when that factory is outside India. You also need an Authorised Indian Representative.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my product needs BIS certification?

Check whether a Quality Control Order covers it. Enter the product or HS code in the checker above, or check the official BIS list of products under compulsory certification. If it's not listed, send it to us on WhatsApp and we'll check for free.

What is the difference between CRS and the ISI mark?

CRS (Scheme-II) is a registration for listed electronics and IT products, based on a test report from a BIS-recognised lab with no factory visit. The ISI mark (Scheme-I) is a licence where BIS tests samples and inspects the factory.

How much does BIS CRS registration cost?

Since 25 February 2026, BIS charges ₹1,000 application + ₹1,000 annual licence fee + a ₹25,000 processing fee every year, paid in advance, plus GST. Until 31 May 2029, micro enterprises and start-ups get 80% off the processing fee. Lab testing is billed separately by the lab.

Is Scheme X still mandatory?

The 2024 machinery order (OTR) that extended Scheme X was withdrawn on 14 January 2026 (S.O. 239(E)). Scheme X still applies to low-voltage switchgear under the Electrical Equipment QCO 2020: AC circuit breakers need the BIS Standard Mark.

Can I import goods without BIS if my product is covered by a QCO?

No. Covered goods need a valid BIS licence or registration with the Standard Mark; customs can hold the shipment otherwise. Some QCOs carry specific exemptions, such as R&D imports under the footwear order.
