How to check a BIS certificate (ISI, CRS or HUID)
Before you pay a supplier, check that its ISI licence or CRS registration is genuine, valid and covers your product. Buying gold? Check the hallmark's HUID.
Quickest way: install the official BIS CARE app from the Bureau of Indian Standards (Google Play). Type in the licence number (ISI mark), registration number (CRS) or HUID (gold hallmark) printed on the product. The app shows who holds the licence, whether it is still valid, and which products and brands it covers.

What you can check in the BIS Care app
| On the product you see… | Enter in BIS Care | The app shows |
|---|---|---|
| ISI mark with a licence number | Licence number | Manufacturer name and address, validity, varieties covered, brands, current status |
| BIS Standard Mark with a registration number (CRS: electronics and IT) | Registration number | Same details for the registration |
| Hallmark on gold jewellery with a 6-digit HUID | HUID | Jewellery details incl. purity |
Step by step
- Install BIS CARE (publisher: Bureau of Indian Standards). Check the publisher name; copycat apps exist on app stores.
- Choose what to verify: licence, registration or HUID.
- Enter the number exactly as printed next to the mark.
- Check that the name, address, product and brand shown match your supplier's invoice and the product you're buying.
- Check the status and validity. A suspended, cancelled or expired licence means the mark is no longer valid for new production.
Checking a supplier before you import
If you import a product covered by a Quality Control Order, the foreign factory must hold its own BIS licence (FMCS) or CRS registration. A trader's or a different factory's licence doesn't cover your goods. Before paying:
- Ask the supplier for the licence or registration number and the factory address.
- Verify it in BIS Care: the factory address and brand must match.
- Check that your exact model or variety is in the scope shown.
- Not sure your product needs BIS at all? Use our free BIS checker.

Checking on the web
BIS also lists registration holders on its websites. For CRS (electronics and IT), the crsbis.in list of registered manufacturers can be searched by R-number, product, model or brand. ISI licence search on Manakonline needs a login, so the app is usually faster.
Found a fake or misused mark?
Use Complaints in the BIS Care app to report a sub-standard marked product, misuse of the ISI or BIS mark, or a misleading quality claim. You get a complaint number by SMS and email.
