Vizhinjam Port gets Customs clearance as gateway cargo terminal

Sep 15, 2025

In a major milestone for Vizhinjam International Seaport, it has received Customs clearance to function as a gateway cargo terminal for import and export (EXIM) trade. The approval was secured through a public notice issued recently by the Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) in Kochi, officially appointing Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd as the custodian of import and export of goods at the facility. With the clearance, the port is now technically ready to handle gateway cargo operations, including the unloading of imported goods and loading of export consignments. Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange System (ICES 1.5) is live at Vizhinjam from Sept. 2, enabling full-fledged documentation and clearance processes. As per the notification, the custodian will be responsible for the safe receipt, handling, storage and accounting of goods. Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd will also be liable for any loss or pilferage of cargo while in its custody, as per a report.
