India is expanding its port capacity six-fold to reach 10,000 million tonnes per annum by 2047, said Mr Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Shipping Minister, while speaking at the second edition of the two-day Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Ports Conclave last week. India aims to be among the top five shipping nations in the world. He emphasised aspects like acceleration of growth through BIMSTEC cooperation, developing a maritime dashboard for project monitoring, promoting PPP models in port infrastructure and advancing coastal economic zones. He also stressed the need to finalise the maritime transport agreement and transform the Bay of Bengal into a global hub for trade and tourism. Together, member countries are sailing towards a connected, resilient and prosperous BIMSTEC maritime future, he added, as per a report.
