Aug 8, 2025
A new era in logistics
In a landmark move for inclusiveness in India’s logistics sector, Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR), the country’s premier logistics Navratna Public Sector Undertaking, officially launched its dedicated parcel service through Indian Railways’ Parcel Van (VP) on August 7, 2025, with the inaugural shipment moving from BIRD (Bhiwandi Road, Mumbai) to SGYT (Sankrail Goods Yard, Kolkata). The rake, with one VP cargo of 23 MT, departed at 22:30 hours from Bhiwandi Road and is scheduled to arrive at Sankrail Goods Yard at 13:00 hours on August 9, 2025.
The service marks a significant step in leveraging the vast rail network for high-volume, time-sensitive cargo movement. Indian Railways, known for its expansive reach and cost-effective freight solutions, has been modernising its Parcel Management System (PMS) to accommodate private logistics players with enhanced booking interfaces, advance reservation options and real-time tracking. The Railways is running Joint Parcel Product - Rapid Cargo System (JPP-RCS) parcel time-tabled trains, which are attractive to businesses for their transit assurance with fixed running schedule.
CONCOR, one of the country’s largest container train operators with a network of 66 terminals, underscored the strategic advantage of this service in streamlining supply chains and boosting efficiency for the logistics sector. The company views Indian Railways’ parcel initiative as a game-changer that can handle large volumes of small- to medium-sized parcels, catering especially to growing MSME, e-commerce and time-sensitive shipments.
CONCOR is revolutionising reliable cargo movement with its door-to-door logistics solutions, ensuring convenience and efficiency. Through its parcel service, the company has rolled out a comprehensive end-to-end logistics offering tailored to meet the expectations of road-based customers, wherein cargo is being picked up from the doorstep of the customer and being delivered in time and safely at the doorstep of the customer at the other end, at a very affordable price, making the switch to rail mode more appealing than ever. Committed to sustainability, CONCOR proudly champions rail-based transportation.
Industry experts view this move as a positive disruption in the logistics landscape, especially for long-haul cargo. With Indian Railways offering competitive rates and nationwide coverage, more logistics firms may follow suit, further boosting rail-based freight movement. CONCOR has expressed strong support and optimism about its newly inaugurated parcel service, as per a communique.
