LMPC Certification is a mandatory compliance requirement for businesses that pre-pack, import, distribute, or sell pre-packaged commodities in India. Under Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, every individual, firm, Hindu Undivided Family, society, company, or corporation that pre-packs or imports packaged goods for sale, distribution, or delivery must apply for registration with the Director or Controller, along with the prescribed fee and documents.
iKargos manages LMPC Certification end-to-end for importers, packers, and manufacturers, so your compliance is in place before your goods are, not after they've already been held at customs.

Overview of LMPC Certification:
LMPC stands for Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities. It is the compliance framework that governs how pre-packaged goods are declared, labeled, and registered before they are sold or distributed in India. A “pre-packaged commodity” is a commodity that is placed in a package, with or without sealing, without the buyer being present, and the package contains a pre-determined quantity.
Legal Metrology, as a discipline, governs the accuracy of measurements and measuring instruments used in trade. The government's objective is straightforward: give the public assurance that the quantities and weights stated on everyday products are accurate, since so much of daily commerce depends on a buyer trusting a label without ever verifying it themselves. The Director of Legal Metrology, empowered as a statutory authority under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, is responsible for overseeing and regulating inter-state trade and commerce involving weights, measures, and pre-packaged commodities
Definition:
"pre-packaged commodity" means a commodity which without the purchaser being present is placed in a package of whatever nature, whether sealed or not, so that the product contained therein has a pre-determined quantity.
Mandatory Declarations on MRP labels:
Every package must comply with the prescribed mandatory declarations such as:
-
- Name and address of the manufacturer or importer.
- Net quantity and weight.
- Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
- Country of Origin.
- Date of manufacture and expiry (if applicable).
- Consumer care details such as phone number or email etc.
These requirements are subject to variation based on different products and are updated periodically.
