The gas VCM is colorless and has a subtle, pleasant smell. It is unstable and quite combustible, though. There is a risk of fire or explosion because of its tendency to polymerize quickly when exposed to heat or when it comes into contact with air, light, catalysts, powerful oxidizers, and certain metals like copper and aluminum.
