Vizhinjam Port sets record with 1.30 lakh TEUs in May

The Adani-operated Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has registered a major milestone, clocking its highest-ever monthly container throughput by processing 130,863 TEUs across 55 vessels in May 2026. This surge broke its previous January record of 1.23 lakh TEUs, maintaining a high operational productivity rate of over 30 crane moves per hour. Crucially, this performance pushed the deep-water transhipment hub past the landmark cumulative figure of 20 lakh (2 million) TEUs handled within just 18 months of starting trial runs. This makes Vizhinjam the fastest Indian port to hit the milestone. Positioned just 10 nautical miles from the primary east-west global shipping lane, its natural 20-metre draft allows it to effortlessly service ultra-large container ships, capturing traffic that traditionally goes to Colombo or Singapore. To support this growth, a Rs 16,000-crore Phase 2 expansion is underway to add a 1.2-km berth extension by 2028.
