Vizhinjam aiming for mix of transhipment and exim in total cargo

Jul 15, 2025

Vizhinjam International Seaport, the country’s first deepwater transhipment port, is rapidly scaling up infrastructure to commence direct export-import (exim) operations, aiming to achieve a 40:60 mix between exim and transhipment cargo volumes over the next three to five years, as per reports. Earlier, it was expected that exim cargo would contribute no more than 10% of total volumes in the first year. But based on the volume of enquiries from consignees and exporters, it now anticipates the share to reach 10-15% in the first year itself. The port has been receiving enquiries from diverse sectors, including textile and garment exporters in Tiruppur and Coimbatore, automakers, and retailers for export shipments to Europe, Singapore and Far East countries, the reports said.
