US Senators question legality of Trump’s deal to allow Russian oil imports

Oct 13, 2026

A bipartisan group of US senators has questioned the legality of President Donald Trump’s decision to allow diesel imports from Russia, arguing it violates a legislative ban remaining in effect until Moscow ends its war in Ukraine. Following a telephone call with Russian leadership, President Trump announced an agreement to immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel to the United States and global markets. Lawmakers contend the administration bypassed statutory consultation requirements and failed to provide required justifications to Congress. The Finance Ministry and international observers are closely monitoring potential impacts on energy markets and global sanctions compliance. Meanwhile, the Indian government maintains an independent stance on global energy procurements, prioritising national economic stability and energy security amid shifting geopolitical trade measures. Critics emphasise that any easing of trade restrictions could inadvertently provide financial relief to Moscow, according to a report.
