Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link enhances all-weather connectivity and freight movement in Kashmir
Oct 21, 2026
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link has established all-weather rail connectivity across the Kashmir Valley, substantially reducing transport times and logistical costs for regional trade. Featuring iconic structures like the world’s highest arch bridge over the Chenab River and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge, the project overcame immense geographical challenges through the Himalayas. Freight operations have flourished since the introduction of dedicated goods services, enabling industrial cargo, cement and essential commodities to reach local markets seamlessly. Furthermore, officials, including Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah, noted that the corridor has revolutionised agricultural logistics, allowing perishable produce such as Kashmiri apples and cherries to reach consumer hubs like Delhi and Mumbai significantly faster than by road, as per a report.
