The digital backbone of Indian logistics: How real-time container tracking is reshaping trade efficiency

India’s logistics has experienced a substantial evolution since the start of the 1991 economic reforms. From the development of newer types of locations for storing freight, such as container freight stations, dry ports, and last mile finishes (last legs), it is apparent that Indian logistics has gained a great deal of efficiency with the advent of technology. The traditional logistics methods of utilising paper logs, manual operations and disjointed systems for the management of a business have all lost relevance. Today, logistics is predominantly based upon the use of real-time monitoring (via GPS and similar technologies), the use of integrated platforms for real-time sharing of data, and employing advanced analytical tools. The establishment of a real-time container tracking system managed by the NLDS and the associated LDB system has played a key role in all these advancements. These developments will enhance the technology of logistics within India, while at the same time creating the groundwork to improve the global competitiveness of trade within the country.

When visibility was an informed guess - The legacy of friction

In the past, container tracking in India, before the era of digitally integrated systems, was very much a ‘patchwork’ system; all players in the supply chain (importers/exporters, shipping lines, terminal operators and transport companies) were each operating from isolated silos that did not communicate with each other. As a result, there were significant unintended consequences:

* Unpredictable lead times led to a lack of confidence from buyers (exporters had to factor in a buffer into their pricing).

* Costs of storage were driven up due to lost time (demurrage/detention charges) when containers remained in terminal yards longer than expected.

* Underutilised assets and idle fleet time inflated logistics costs.

* The cumulative effect: India lost trade competitiveness at a time when global supply chains prized speed and reliability.

In earlier public discourse, logistics expenditures in India were pegged at 13-14% of GDP. But recent work offers a more precise picture: the 2023-24 NCAER-DPIIT “Assessment of Logistics Cost” estimates logistics now at 7.97% of GDP and 9.09% of non-services output. This compression is encouraging, but the ambition now is to push closer to global benchmarks (~6 %) over time.

Digital Public Infrastructure: From promise to platform

The government’s interventions, Ease of Doing Business, Digital India, and the PM Gati Shakti Masterplan, have nudged logistics into the digital domain. Logistics ceased to be “just transport and warehouses” and became a domain of data interoperability. A centralised hub for logistical stakeholders that allows them to easily share information across all government agencies and levels of shipping and transport. The vision of this centralised hub is supported by a variety of programs and services, including:

* Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) that bring all shipping methods together to reduce the number of times packages need to change hands and be transported in different ways. 

* Programs that combine the infrastructure of Sagarmala and Dedicated Freight Corridors with data from the internet, thus allowing all transportation systems to work together.

* The movement to introduce digital tolling, GPS tracking requirements and upgrades to port systems creates the infrastructure to allow real-time visibility of all transportation moves.

It is against this evolving logistics infrastructure that real-time tracking finds its full potential.

Real-time container tracking: What it enables, across the board

Real-time tracking is more than location pinging. It is an event-driven visibility layer, triggered by RFID readers and integrated system handoffs. Its benefits ripple across stakeholder groups:

* The benefits of the solution will impact and support all types of stakeholders. Exporting or importing companies will be able to take advantage of “micro windows” for their pick-ups and deliveries, providing more precise Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and reduced margins.

* Customs / Regulators will be able to maintain an audit trail as well as being alerted for anomaly detection (e.g., road deviations from their prescribed route), which will decrease the likelihood of smuggling.

* Logistics Services Carriers / Providers will be able to eliminate idle turnaround time; maximise their fleet usage, optimise their transhipment routing and prevent bottlenecks from developing.

* Real-time yard flow data will allow terminals / ports to schedule their gates and control congestion dynamically based on actual capacity and demand.

In sum: real-time visibility transforms logistics from “fire-fighting mode” to “anticipation mode”.

NLDS & LDB: From vision to national spine

This is where NLDS (NICDC Logistics Data Services Ltd.) becomes a strategic actor. The NLDS, developed as a partnership between NICDIT (Government of India) and NEC (Japan), was created to provide comprehensive real-time visibility of container movement throughout the country (in all EXIM channels).

The LDB, NLDS’s main output, has created an integrated view of port, terminal, CFS, ICD and road corridor data in one dashboard through its various components. The following features are included in the LDB’s design:

* All TEUs can be identified using RFID technology; every TEU has a unique digital address.

* Real-time visibility into the movement of containers in transit is possible, not only within the borders of India, but also for shipping containers between India and overseas.

* Performance benchmarking of all terminals, corridors and actors in the logistics chain creates a “heat map” of the efficiency of the logistics chain.

* This scalable architecture was designed so that, as of March 2024, it is already providing dwell time, throughput data and container counts for various areas of India.

The evolution is continuing. In late 2025, the upgrade LDB 2.0 promises to extend its real-time tracking to on-sea container segments and inland truck movement, thereby bridging the “final mile” visibility gap.  

The outcome is already measurable: container dwell times at major ports have dropped, predictability for exporters has improved, and the value of data-driven decision levers is real across the sector.

The efficiency cascade: Beyond speed to strategic advantage

Real-time tracking is not a siloed tool; it creates systemic ripple effects across India’s trade competitiveness:

* Compression of logistics costs as a share of GDP: The target is ~6% as logistics becomes more automated and advanced with technology; decreasing the current distance between high-efficiency nations.

* Supporting MSMEs and small exporters: The introduction of visibility creates a level playing field where smaller exporters have the same logistics transparency benefits as large corporations.

* Bringing global supply chains to India: India’s credibility as a reliable node in Just-in-Time networks, particularly in trade routes between Asia-Africa and Europe continues to grow due to increased effectiveness of India’s supply chain infrastructure.

*Aggregate logistics data as a policy development tool: Aggregate logistics by industry data provides a mechanism for the policymakers to identify bottlenecks, create designs for corridors, and make decisions about investments into logistics infrastructure.
The road ahead: From visibility to intelligence

 

Today, real-time tracking of containers is a requirement. At present, it’s important to explore the possibilities of integrating emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain and Predictive Analytics into the creation of new and innovative products and services.

 

Predicting congestion and risk: Accurately predict the exact place(s) that your container may be delayed or stuck due to congestion.
Dynamic route re-planned by smart technology: Reroute your containers using current information (traffic, weather, back-up at terminals).

 

Custody records (transactional) recorded on Blockchain: The confirmation of security who had the control of the items that were maintained/stored as well as that all within control were treated properly by processing actions taken for these items.

 

Detecting anomalies using Machine Learning: Automatically create alerts when containers are out of range/have stalled.

NLDS, with its anchor in LDB, is primed to evolve into not just a visibility engine, but the intelligence layer over India’s logistics fabric.

Conclusion: The unseen backbone in motion

Real-time container tracking is no longer an experimental tool. It is quietly becoming the infrastructural layer over which Indian trade will scale. NLDS and the LDB system are laying down that digital spine, integrating disparate actors into one rhythm, converting opacity into insight, and shifting logistics from a cost center to a strategic asset.

Visibility is necessary for a business, while speed is simply good business with the growth of global trade. The fact that India has embraced real-time tracking technology shows not only modernisation but also shows that India plans on leading instead of being a follower within the global supply chain.
