Suez Canal reclaims significant share of global liner services
Oct 23, 2026
Global ocean carriers have restored regular transit through the Suez Canal for roughly 5.5 million TEUs of container fleet capacity operating on Far East and Europe trade lanes, marking a major operational pivot back to traditional maritime routes. According to analytical data from Alphaliner, this capacity shift represents over 60% of all shipping volumes previously diverted around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope during extended geopolitical disruptions in the region. Leading container lines are progressively reintroducing mega vessels into trans-Suez rotations to capitalise on transit times that are up to fourteen days faster than southern detours.
However, while direct routing lowers bunker fuel expenses and speeds up vessel turnaround schedules, the simultaneous arrival of converging fleets is creating significant operational friction at key European hub ports. Major discharge terminals in Northern Europe are experiencing initial vessel bunching, yard density surges and landside transport bottlenecks as supply chain networks rebalance, as per a report.
