South Korea launches first Arctic container voyage; faces Western pique

South Korea is launching its first commercial container vessel bound for Europe via the Arctic Northern Sea Route. A container ship will sail north from Busan toward European ports, including Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Gdansk. By leveraging seasonal sea-ice melts, Seoul aims to test the route’s commercial viability and potentially cut Europe-bound transit times by up to 35% compared to the Suez Canal corridor. However, the initiative has sparked geopolitical friction with Western allies. Transiting northern Arctic waters requires explicit coordination, permits and potential icebreaker support from Russia.
