SMP Kolkata deploys INR 5,000 crore modernisation blueprint to boost cargo capacity

Jun 30, 2026

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMP Kolkata) is gearing up to meet an ambitious cargo target of 74 million tonnes (MT) during the financial year 2026-27. To support this growth, the port authority is executing an extensive `5,000 crore capital expenditure program across its twin dock systems—the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) - aimed at sweeping modernisation, digitisation, and mechanised capacity expansions over the next few years. A central pillar of this expansion strategy is shifting to a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with plans to monetise up to 14 critical berths to improve operational efficiency and reduce logistics handling costs. The port is also fast-tracking the development of a state-of-the-art terminal at Balagarh, located approximately 85 km upstream, to establish a dedicated extended gateway for inland waterways and regional cargo, according to a report.
