Saudi Arabia launches new Red Sea shipping route linking Jeddah with India, Djibouti

Amid ongoing regional maritime shifts, Saudi Arabia has added a strategic new Red Sea shipping route linking Jeddah Islamic Port directly with major hubs in India and Djibouti. Launched by Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) in collaboration with global container shipping lines, the new service—designated as the India-Red Sea-Djibouti (IRD) route—aims to drastically enhance regional trade connectivity and optimise transit times. It creates a seamless, high-capacity commercial corridor between the Indian Subcontinent, East Africa and Saudi Arabia’s western coastline. This infrastructure expansion is highly significant given the current volatility in adjacent shipping lanes. By positioning Jeddah as a key transhipment nexus, the route provides global trade networks with a reliable, streamlined logistics alternative through the Red Sea. The move directly supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objective to double its container handling capacity and cement the Kingdom’s status as a dominant logistics bridge connecting three continents, said a report.
