S. Viswanathan elevated as Chairperson in-charge of Chennai Port Authority

 

Mr Sunil Paliwal, IAS (TN: 1993), relinquished charge as Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority, with effect from 30.11.2025 and has been appointed as Chairman, Inland Waterways Authority of India, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.

Subsequently, Mr S. Viswanathan, IAS (MP: 2008), Deputy Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority, has taken over as Chairperson in-charge of Chennai Port Authority with effect from 01.12.2025.

Mr Viswanathan is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate and an MBA in Marketing & Finance.  He has also completed Micromasters Programme in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 

 A dynamic IAS officer, he took various pioneering initiatives as Mission Director of National Health Mission in Madhya Pradesh. His distinguished career also encompasses positions such as Commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Guwahati, Managing Director at Tourism Department, and Chief Executive Officer of Ayushman Bharat, all of which left their impact. 

His commitment and efficiency earned him the Chief Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration on two different occasions, demonstrating his ethical administrative practices. 

Mr Viswanathan is also the Managing Director of Maritime India Foundation, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, informed a release.
