Russia offers to help India build shipbuilding clusters in Mumbai, Chennai

Russia has offered to help India establish shipbuilding and ship repair clusters in Mumbai or Chennai, according to Russian presidential aide and Russian Maritime Board Chairman Mr Nikolai Patrushev, who participated in the Russian-Indian consultations in New Delhi this week. He also noted the prospect of setting up a joint database of unified shipbuilding projects, which will allow India to drastically reduce the costs of renovating its fleet. 

Russia can offer New Delhi interesting initiatives in shipbuilding, including providing current projects or developing new ones for fishing, passenger and auxiliary vessels. It has extensive experience in building specialised vessels, for example, ice-class vessels, not to mention ice-breakers. There are also opportunities for cooperation in green shipbuilding, which is one of the top priorities for India in the maritime sector, he said, as per a report.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said in a communique that Union Minister Mr Sarbananda Sonowal held productive discussions with Mr Patrushev, focused on shipbuilding collaboration, development of commercial shipping, international transport corridors, scientific & technical cooperation and training of civilian maritime personnel.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the comprehensive and forward-looking discussions and reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation across shipbuilding, port development, maritime logistics, Arctic operations, research and training. The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to build a more resilient, efficient and sustainable maritime partnership that contributes to the long-term prosperity of both nations and strengthens regional and global connectivity.

This was yet another important milestone in Indo-Russian friendship and maritime collaboration, the communique added.
