Russia imports first gasoline cargoes from India to ease fuel shortages

 

In a historic reversal of traditional energy trade flows, Russia has begun importing gasoline from India for the first time on record to mitigate severe domestic fuel shortages. The supply crunch follows repeated Ukrainian drone strikes on major Russian oil refineries, which knocked out roughly one-third of Moscow’s refining capacity and reduced processing throughput to 3.6 million barrels per day in July. According to vessel-tracking data from Kpler and LSEG, the fuel originates from Nayara Energy’s 400,000-barrel-per-day Vadinar refinery in Gujarat—which is partially owned by Russian state oil giant Rosneft. The initial shipments involved Russian-linked shadow fleet tankers conducting ship-to-ship (STS) transfers off the coast of Damietta and Port Said before transporting the gasoline cargoes to Russian ports, including the Arctic port of Vitino, for onward rail distribution into domestic consumer markets, said a report.
