Railways aiming at increasing freight share

Indian Railways has set a target of lifting freight’s modal share on the rail network from roughly 24% today to between 30% and 40% over the next five to ten years.

Speaking at the seventh edition of FICCI’s Smart Railways Conclave, Future Rail India 2026, Mr Rajesh Agarwal, Additional Member (Works) at the Railway Board, said freight demand on the network was projected to reach 8,000 billion tonnes by 2030. Indian Railways is now the world’s second largest cargo carrier by volume, up from fourth, even as its share of the country’s total freight movement remains well below potential, a release highlighted.
