Railways achieves record bulk commodity loading driven by coal, cement and steel demand
Sep 11, 2026
A sharp increase in rail freight loading volumes serves as a leading indicator of sustained, broadbased domestic economic activity and industrial demand. Driven by heavy demand for key bulk commodities—including thermal coal for power generation, raw materials for steel plants, cement and containerised goods—rail freight tonnage recorded significant year-on-year gains. The surge highlights the operational impact of targeted capital expenditure under the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, including the commissioning of key segments along the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs). By increasing average freight train speeds and improving terminal turnaround times, the national carrier is accelerating a long-term modal shift from road to rail, reducing overall logistics costs for primary industries and fortifying core supply chains across major industrial belts, according to a report.
