Pulse imports drop 35 pc as domestic stocks swell

Apr 1, 2026

India’s pulse imports fell sharply in FY26 after a record year. Mr Satish Upadhyay, Secretary of the India Pulses and Grains Association, said total FY26 imports will likely be just above 5.2 million tonnes — down from a record 7.3 MT in FY25. Import value dropped 35% to $2.97 billion in April-January FY26 against $4.6 billion a year earlier. Volume fell 18% to 4.9 MT. Adequate carry-forward stocks and strong domestic production of 25.68 MT drove the decline. Global prices too fell sharply. Yellow peas dropped from $400 to $300 per tonne. Bengal gram fell from $700 to $520 per tonne. Yellow pea and masur imports declined 49% and 24%, respectively. Urad and arhar rose 35% and 15%. Duty-free imports of tur and urad are likely to be extended beyond March 2026, according to a report.
