Oman partners with IMO to launch temporary maritime transit corridor

Oman, in coordination with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), has announced the establishment of a temporary maritime shipping corridor for vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to the Oman News Agency, the route is open to all commercial maritime traffic, provided that vessel operators coordinate their transits in advance with both the IMO and Omani authorities based on newly approved geographic coordinates. The emergency initiative is designed to guarantee freedom of navigation and secure the uninterrupted flow of global trade through the volatile chokepoint following a period of severe regional blockades and lingering maritime gridlock. Oman emphasised that the measures comply strictly with international maritime law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, explicitly reaffirming that transit passage will remain entirely free of charge. This move aligns with recent diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran aimed at restoring regional stability, said a report.
