New Iranian rail corridor cuts transit times for Indian cargo bound for Eurasia

Sep 29, 2026

Iran has reportedly completed the track-laying works for the strategic 628-kilometre Chabahar-Zahedan railway project, establishing a direct rail link between the Indian-operated Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar and the national Iranian rail network at Zahedan. The completed line serves as a key inland segment of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), enabling seamless rail transport from Chabahar northwards toward Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and broader Central Asian and European markets. By bypassing overland bottlenecks and reducing dependence on road freight, the newly operationalised corridor cuts logistics costs and slashes transit times for Indian trade moving into landlocked Eurasian economies. The development significantly enhances Chabahar Port’s operational viability, positioning it as a primary maritime transit gateway for South Asian trade with Central Asia, Russia, and beyond, according to a report.
