Multilateral regional maritime talks on Strait of Hormuz postponed amid consensus gaps and regional escalations

Sep 16, 2026

Diplomatic efforts to establish a regulated commercial navigation framework through the Strait of Hormuz faced a setback after Oman postponed a high-level regional summit scheduled in Salalah. Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi confirmed the delay was decided “in the interests of consensus,” following requests from regional states including Saudi Arabia. The talks were designed to review a joint Omani-Iranian proposal for temporary commercial transit corridors. However, consensus collapsed over unresolved issues related to Iranian traffic management, potential transit fees and escalating regional hostilities. The diplomatic friction has been exacerbated by Houthi advances in Yemen and recent strikes affecting both commercial vessels and Saudi crude transit infrastructure. With daily vessel transits through Hormuz dropping sharply, Asian and global energy supply chains face sustained freight volatility, extended transit routes and higher marine insurance premiums. At the same time, regional mediation remains stalled, as per a report.
