Mormugao Port declared first green port in India: MPA Chairman
Sep 16, 2025
Mormugao Port has been declared the first accredited green port in India under the Green Port Certification Programme, announced Mr N. Vinodkumar, Chairman, Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), at a roadshow held in the lead-up to India Maritime Week 2025. MPA has received the accreditation from the Centre of Excellence on ESG and Circularity, Mumbai. It is one of the three ports selected by the World Bank under the project for the greening of ports, added Mr Vinodkumar.
The green port certification came a year after Mormugao Port became the country’s first port to offer incentives and discounts to commercial vessels based on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) scores. The port’s measures align with global efforts to reduce air emissions in shipping. To try and reduce its carbon footprint, MPA operationalised a 3MW solar power plant, with plans to expand it to 5MW, as per a report.
