Major American retailers suspend orders from India

 

Major American retailers, including Walmart, Amazon, Target and Gap, have reportedly suspended orders from India following US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Exporters have reportedly received emails and letters from US buyers asking them to halt apparel and textile shipments until further notice. These buyers are unwilling to absorb the increased cost burden and pass the extra costs on to their clients, pressuring Indian exporters to shoulder the financial impact themselves. Higher tariffs are expected to increase costs by 30-35%, and could also lead to a 40-50% drop in US-bound orders, causing about $4-5 billion in losses, as per a report.
