Maharashtra to build India’s largest shipyard

Dec 16, 2025

Maharashtra CM Mr Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to move swiftly toward establishing India’s largest shipyard in the state by 2026, citing its 720 km coastline, the scale of the upcoming Vadhvan Port and the growing potential of the maritime economy. A detailed project report must be prepared and an appropriate location identified at the earliest, he said at a review meeting of the Ports Development Department. Fisheries and Ports Development Minister Mr Nitesh Rane attended the meeting, which also reviewed progress on port infrastructure and maritime connectivity. The CM also called for the Kolhapur-Vaibhavwadi railway line to be taken up on priority to boost access to the ports at Jaigad, Angre, Redi and Vijaydurg, and asked officials to outline the state’s financial participation, as per a report.
