Line eyes Suez return as soon as security conditions allow

Nov 28, 2025

Maersk has signalled its intention to resume transits through the Red Sea and Suez Canal as soon as security conditions allow, following nearly two years of diversions around the Cape of Good Hope. CEO Mr Vincent Clerc said the company is encouraged by progress in the regional security environment and the emerging peace framework in Gaza, which has helped restore confidence in freedom of navigation through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Speaking in Egypt with Suez Canal Authority Chair Osama Rabiee, Mr Clerc said Maersk would normalise transit over time, but stressed that the safety of crew, vessels and cargo remains the company’s primary concern. The comments came as the Suez Canal Authority announced a strategic partnership agreement with the Danish carrier, highlighting December as a precursor to a full return, a claim Maersk reportedly stopped short of confirming, as per a report.
