Kottayam Port commences container movement to Vizhinjam
Sep 17, 2026
Kottayam Port in Kerala has begun its first container movement to Vizhinjam, marking a new connection between Kerala’s inland cargo network and India’s first deep-water transhipment port Vizhinjam International Seaport.
A container, carrying more than 19 tonnes of rubber mats, was despatched at around 6:30 pm on September 11, 2026 and reportedly reached Vizhinjam the same night. The consignment was for export to Toronto, Canada, as per a communique.
Kottayam Port officials said the new connection could provide exporters and importers with a more cost-effective route to international markets. Exporters and importers from neighbouring states are also said to be showing interest in using the facility.
The first movement marks another step towards strengthening Kottayam-Vizhinjam connectivity and expanding Kerala’s EXIM network, the communique added.
