Kochi Metro to launch freight service

Sep 26, 2025

Kochi Metro is launching a freight service similar to the model initiated by Delhi Metro. The service can be used to transfer non-perishable packaged goods during off-peak hours. This service will be implemented in a way that does not inconvenience passengers. The decision follows the Union government’s recommendation to begin freight services on all Metro trains in the country. The freight service will greatly benefit the business community in Kochi and help KMRL generate additional revenue. Moreover, it will strengthen ties with business establishments and offer a new avenue for businesses to quickly transfer goods and services. The cargo and logistics services via metro trains will not only reduce dependency on road transport but also ease congestion and curb vehicular emissions. Globally, metro systems are increasingly exploring ways to utilise spare capacity to generate revenue while promoting sustainability, as per a report.
