Kerala plans transformation of Kollam Port into satellite facility for Vizhinjam
Sep 22, 2026
The Kerala government has initiated steps to upgrade Kollam Port into a dedicated satellite port for the Vizhinjam International Transshipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport, aiming to build an integrated coastal logistics ecosystem. Located approximately 70 km north of Vizhinjam, Kollam Port will handle feeder vessels, coastal cargo movements and regional trade consolidation, alleviating potential yard congestion at Vizhinjam as mainline container traffic ramps up. The strategic plan includes capital dredging to increase draft depth, expanding berth capacity, and improving rail and road hinterland connectivity linking Kollam to key industrial hubs in Southern Kerala and Tamil Nadu, according to a report.
