JN Port: Scaling new heights at 36

May 26, 2025

As Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) marks 36 years of service to the trade on Monday, May 26, 2025, it continues to stand tall in India’s ports and shipping sector, setting new benchmarks and achieving significant milestones. Over the decades, JNPA has revolutionised India’s international trade, introducing cutting-edge technology and global best practices through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), ensuring world class productivity and operational excellence. As India’s leading container-handling facility, JNPA also holds the distinction of being the country’s first fully landlord port and is recognised among the Top 30 (No. 26) ports globally. JN Port remains steadfast in its pursuit of excellence. The fiscal year 2024-25 saw the port cross the 7 million TEU milestone, reaching 7.3 million TEUs—a remarkable 13.55% growth over the previous year. Additionally, total cargo tonnage soared to 92.11 million metric tonnes (MMT), up 7.34% from 85.82 MMT in the preceding financial year. As shown in the table, the port’s multiple terminals played a pivotal role in these achievements, each delivering exceptional results: * BMCT set new records, handling 222,201 TEUs in March 2025 and 2.27 million TEUs in FY2025—the highest container throughput by any terminal. * APMT maintained its position with 2.08 million TEUs handled, reinforcing its status as a 2-million TEU terminal. * BMCT, APMT and NSFT achieved their highest-ever throughput figures. * NSDT recorded unprecedented volumes, handling 1.8 million tonnes of cement and 0.45 million tonnes of steel. * BMCT Phase-2 operations commenced on February 5, 2025, expanding capacity further. * The port also hit an all-time high rail volume of 1,078,315 TEUs, surpassing the previous 1,076,152 TEUs. * JJLTPL launched Liquid Terminal operations at LB-3 and LB-4 on November 5, 2024. * Centralized Parking Plaza (CPP) achieved a record 105,850 TEUs in March 2025, exceeding the prior high of 98,249 TEUs in March 2023. With BMCT’s Phase-2 operations now underway, JN Port has become India’s first port with a capacity exceeding 10 million TEUs, under the leadership of Chairperson, Mr Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, and his team. As JNPA advances toward even greater achievements, its commitment to efficiency and innovation ensures its continued role as a pillar of Indian trade.
