Industry doyen Capt. J. C. Anand no more; leaves a lasting legacy

Exim India mourns the passing of Capt. J. C. Anand, a towering figure in the Indian shipping industry and maritime sector, whose vision and leadership shaped its course for decades. He was 104.

Born over a century ago, in March 1922 in Sargodha, undivided India, into an army family, Capt. Anand moved to Bombay at the age of 16 and began his maritime journey aboard TS Dufferin, the British Navy’s cadet ship for Indians. From his early days as a cadet in the pre-independence era, he rose to become a Master and Chief Marine Superintendent, before distinguishing himself as a shipowner and serving as President of the Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA).

 

 

Capt. Anand, who had many firsts to his credit, rose from the ranks as a navigating cadet to become a shipowner in his own right. He has held the highest positions in the shipping industry during his illustrious career, imbibing the best pioneering nationalist traditions. He was elected President of INSA for three successive terms, during which he championed the cause of Indian shipping with exceptional dexterity, persuasiveness and dignity.

He was largely instrumental in the establishment of the national ship classification society, Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), of which he was also the Chairman. It was his perseverance that saw IRS becoming a full member of the elite International Association of Classification Societies. He was also one of the founding members of The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI). 
Capt. Anand was a recipient of the Varuna Award, the most prestigious honour in the Indian maritime sector, besides numerous other domestic and international accolades.

 

He was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Exim India’s Maritime And Logistics Awards (MALA), the inaugural edition in 2010. 

 

He held firm conviction on the need for maximum possible self-reliance in shipping, a cause he strongly promoted at every possible national and international fora. His contributions not only elevated the stature of Indian shipping but also inspired generations of maritime professionals.

Capt. J. C. Anand’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy encompassing vision, resilience and dedication will continue to guide the industry he so passionately served.
