India seen continuing to develop Chabahar port despite US sanctions

Sep 30, 2025

India is expected to continue developing the key Chabahar port in Iran due to its strategic value as a trade gateway to Central Asia and the Middle East, despite the project facing the threat of imminent US sanctions. Washington’s revocation of a waiver on sanctions for the port may lead to delays in construction and investments, as well as complicate India’s efforts to boost trade with Afghanistan and beyond, forcing it to rely again on overland routes. Mr Kabir Taneja, Deputy Director and Middle East fellow at the Observer Research Foundation think tank in India, was quoted as saying that the immediate impact of Washington’s move would be a slowdown in the port’s development and related projects. However, India would not abandon the project as a 10-year deal for its development was only signed last year, as per a report.
