The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its July 2026 World Economic Outlook Update, marginally lowered India’s GDP growth forecast for FY27 to 6.4%, down from its April estimate of 6.5%. Despite the slight reduction, India firmly retains its status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, outperforming global peers amid widespread macroeconomic headwinds. The IMF attributed India’s resilience to robust domestic momentum, particularly strong private consumption and vibrant services sector activity. The minor downgrade reflects external pressures, mainly driven by the escalating Middle East conflict, volatile global commodity markets and higher energy prices. Looking ahead, the IMF expressed confidence in a swift recovery, upwardly revising India’s FY28 growth projection by 20 basis points to 6.7% as external supply shocks subside. Meanwhile, reflecting the broader drag of geopolitical tensions, the lender cut its global growth forecast for 2026 to 3.0%, said a report.
