India extends pulse import policy till March 2027

Apr 6, 2026

India has extended its pulse import policy for another year. The government has prolonged the current import regime for yellow peas until March 31, 2027. The legume can be imported without a minimum import price and without port restrictions, while the 10% Customs duty and an additional 20% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess remain in effect. The existing import rules also continue to apply to pigeon peas and mung beans, which can still be imported duty-free. The 30% combined levy on yellow peas was introduced in October 2025. Average mandi prices of major pulses had been trading below their respective Minimum Support Prices due to a surge in cheap yellow pea imports from Canada, Australia and Russia. Pulse imports in 2026-27 are estimated to remain above 50 lakh tonnes, according to a report.
