India depends on China for over 80% of imports across electronics product lines
Oct 7, 2026
China supplied at least 80% of India’s imports across 71 electronic product lines in FY26 - a 60% increase from 44 product lines in FY19—revealing a widening structural dependence on Chinese upstream components, according to a report by the Koan Advisory Group and the Institute of Chinese Studies. Analysing trade under Harmonised System (HS) Chapter 85, the study emphasises that import is concentrated in essential intermediate hardware—such as electric motors, switching equipment, cables and lithium-ion batteries—rather than finished consumer goods. Out of India’s $112.1 billion overall trade deficit with China in FY26, electrical machinery accounted for $43.1 billion (38%), driven heavily by lithium-ion battery imports surging to $3.9 billion (83.6% Chinese market share).
