India buying more US crude, coal, gas

Sep 30, 2025

India is widening its US energy basket — buying more coal, LNG, propane and butane, while also pushing ahead with plans to expand civil nuclear co-operation with an additional 100 GW capacity. Kpler data shows India’s crude imports from the US have climbed by roughly 80,000 barrels per day (b/d) year-on-year in 2025, averaging 277,000 b/d so far. Flows could edge up to 300,000-350,000 b/d, but that remains far below the 2021 peak of 415,000 b/d when American grades covered about 10% of India’s total intake. However, India’s US-linked energy buys are expanding more noticeably in gas and LPG. LNG imports have reached about 2 million tonnes (mt) so far this year (till September 25), compared to 5 mt for the whole of 2024, with state-run GAIL scouting for additional long-term deals, as per a report.
