Global containership orderbook reaches record 16.2 million TEU as Megamax demand surges
Oct 30, 2026
The global containership orderbook has officially breached the 16 million TEU mark, reaching a record high of 16.2 million TEU—equivalent to roughly 46.5% of the world’s operating fleet capacity. Maritime intelligence data from Linerlytica indicates that the recent surge was accelerated by fresh Megamax contracts, including a major order by MSC for 20 LNG dual-fuel 24,000-TEU vessels at Hengli Heavy Industries in China, alongside additional orders from HMM and regional tonnage providers. This ordering spree represents the highest orderbook-to-fleet ratio observed since 2009. While carriers continue to invest heavily in modern green-fuel tonnage to meet decarbonisation mandates and replace ageing mid-sized vessels, industry analysts warn that severe overcapacity risks loom large over 2027-2028. As low vessel scrapping rates persist and Suez Canal transit normalisations potentially release latent fleet capacity, ocean freight rates are projected to come under sustained downward pressure once newbuilding deliveries hit peak delivery cycles, according to a report.
