Germany wants EU-GCC to protect maritime trade routes
Oct 9, 2025
German Foreign Minister Mr Johann Wadephul has expressed the European Union’s intent, with Germany as its leading member, to strengthen cooperation with Gulf states to secure strategic maritime routes and counter what he described as Iran’s destabilising policies in the region. The Minister was speaking on the sidelines of meetings between EU Foreign Ministers and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Kuwait. Key international trade routes, particularly the Gulf of Aden, Bab al-Mandeb and the Red Sea, have recently faced significant challenges due to attacks on international shipping by the Houthi militias in Yemen. He stressed the importance of halting Houthi activities and said discussions with GCC representatives reflected a shared understanding that the focus should not only be on addressing symptoms, but also on tackling the root causes in Iran, as per a report.
