Full market recovery and rate stabilisation a few months away

Jun 23, 2026

West Asia crisis

The ongoing West Asia crisis has driven global container freight spot rates sharply higher, with industry analysts warning that a full market recovery and rate stabilisation could take until September 2026. Before the flare-up in regional conflict, approximately 99 commercial container services operated within or transited through the Arabian Gulf, with an aggregate capacity of 3.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units, accounting for nearly 10% of the global container fleet. The subsequent chokepoint blockades, localised vessel detentions, and strict route diversions have severely disrupted these established trade lanes, starving major regional transhipment hubs of predictable capacity. Even with recent diplomatic breakthroughs prompting a gradual reopening of vital shipping corridors, the compounding impact of severe equipment mismatches, stranded cargo backlogs and lingering high-risk insurance premiums means global carriers face a prolonged gridlock that will continue to inflate spot market freight rates across key East-West trade lanes through the summer, according to a report.
