EU to curb cheap plastics imports to shore up its recycling industry

The EU is preparing checks on imported plastics and other measures to shore up its recycling industry, after a wave of plant closures driven by sluggish demand and cheap imports, including from China. Proposals include checks on imports to ensure they are recycled, moves towards a single market for waste, and clearer rules for chemical recycling. Jessika Roswall, EU Environment Commissioner, said that the industry is in deep crisis, adding that it’s important to make some changes now. She said 10 plants had closed in the Netherlands alone over the past 18 months. Across the bloc, about 1 million tonnes of recycling capacity had shut in the same period — the equivalent of France’s annual output. The EU plans to step up monitoring of imports and introduce a new Customs code to distinguish recycled plastic from new material, as per a report.
