India’s edible oil imports surged by nearly 33% month-on-month in July 2026 to reach approximately 1.89 million tonnes—the highest monthly import volume in almost two years—according to trade data released by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA). The sharp uptick was led by robust buying of crude palm oil (CPO) and crude soybean oil as refiners and processors built up inventories ahead of the upcoming festival season. Crude palm oil shipments led the growth, supported by competitive pricing relative to soft oils and a reduction in export duties by key origin countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. Simultaneously, soybean oil imports jumped sharply as buyers capitalised on favourable arbitrage margins from South America. Trade analysts noted that the strong import momentum will help stabilise domestic wholesale vegetable oil prices, satisfy elevated seasonal demand and maintain comfortable pipeline stocks across major Indian port hubs, as per a report.
