Nov 14, 2025
There is need for global cooperation in maritime security, and India’s approach to maritime security through its MAHASAGAR outlook, as well as initiatives like Indo-Pacific cooperation and port-led development assume special significance in this regard, said Mr S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister (EAM), at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Outreach Session on Maritime Security and Prosperity in Canada. He underscored India’s emergence as a first responder in the maritime domain and its efforts to strengthen Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) partnerships in the Indo-Pacific through joint exercises and logistics agreements.
Mr Jaishankar outlined India’s key recommendations, that included the importance of trusted and diversified maritime links, upgrading shipping infrastructure, developing resilient trade corridors, and enhancing coordination to protect critical maritime and undersea infrastructure. He further noted that maritime threats and economic crimes, including piracy, smuggling and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, require deeper international collaboration, as per a report.
