E-way bill generation surges to second-highest ever in April

E-Way Bill (EWB) generation in April 2025 has surged to a second all-time high of 11.93 crore, an increase of over 23% compared to April last year. The spike could have some impact on GST collections in May, data for which will be out on June 1. Two major changes in EWB have taken place from April 1. First, the GST Network mandated Multi-Factor Authentication for all taxpayers and users accessing the e-way bill and e-invoice portals, which would have pushed the e-way bill numbers. Second, the fact that the e-way bill system has been integrated with the Indian Railways' Parcel system since January is also credited for the strong growth in EWB generation. Experts attribute the growth to a pick-up in economic activities, among other issues, as per a report.
