Director General of Shipping emphasises critical role of safe, compliant and certified packaging in dangerous goods transportation

Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, participated as the Chief Guest at the One Day National Conference on Export Packaging for Safe Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air & Sea & UN Certification, organised by the Indian Institute of Packaging recently in Mumbai.

In his address, he emphasised the critical role of safe, compliant and certified packaging in ensuring the secure transportation of dangerous goods. Aligning with the objectives of Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, he highlighted the IMDG Code as the cornerstone of safe carriage by sea. Drawing lessons from recent incidents, including the sinking of a vessel, he stressed the importance of strict compliance, robust preventive measures and shared stakeholder responsibility to prevent accidents and losses during the transportation of dangerous goods by air and sea, as per a communique.
