DGS orders shipping firms to restrict Indian seafarer deployment in Persian Gulf

Following the fatal US military strike on the tanker MT Settebello that killed three Indian crew members, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has issued an urgent security advisory instructing Indian manning agencies and shipping lines to strictly restrict the deployment of Indian seafarers on vessels transiting the highly volatile Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The regulatory directive comes as New Delhi moves to aggressively protect its maritime workforce, which accounts for nearly 15% of the global seafaring pool. Under the new protocol, shipping operators are required to provide comprehensive risk disclosures to all crew members and enforce an absolute “right to refuse” assignment for any vessel routed through the West Asian conflict zone. Furthermore, for vessels that must transit these waters, the government has mandated a zero-tolerance tracking mechanism, requiring all ship masters to submit real-time positional telemetry data directly to the Indian Navy through the online Ship Reporting Form, according to a report.
