Container ship fleet grew by 4.2% in total vessel count, 4.4% in fully cellular ships and 7.4% in total deadweight in 2025

At the end of 2025, the active container ship fleet includes almost 7,500 vessels (6,669 of which are fully cellular units), with a combined capacity of just under 400 million metric tons of deadweight.

Looking at the progress over the past twelve months, at the end of last year, the active fleet stood at just under 7,200 vessels (6,389 fully cellular), with a total deadweight of 372.1 million tons.

This means the fleet grew by 4.2% in total vessel count, 4.4% in fully cellular container ships, and 7.4% in total deadweight.

Total TEU capacity increased by 7.2%, rising from 31.4 Mteu to 33.6 Mteu over the past year, highlighted an Alphaliner release.
