Global freight markets are experiencing a sharp divergence as a tentative Middle East ceasefire softens liquid tanker rates, while ocean container shipping rates aggressively surge. The pause in hostilities has deflated the extreme war-risk premiums that previously buoyed crude and chemical tankers. As vessel traffic cautiously ticks up through alternative corridors in the Strait of Hormuz and bunker fuel costs ease, spot tanker rates are sliding. Conversely, container spot rates from East Asia to the US are skyrocketing, with West Coast rates hitting $5,200 to $6,200 per FEU. This spike is driven by massive “frontloading”—importers panic-shipping inventory early to beat a looming wave of new US import tariffs scheduled for late July. This has effectively pulled the traditional autumn peak shipping season forward into mid-summer, leaving Transpacific vessels completely full and triggering heavy carrier surcharges, according to a report.
